Pacific Chorus Frogs in the Willamette Valley
The Pacific Chorus Frog (Pseudacris regilla, also known as the Pacific Tree Frog) is very common in the Willamette Valley, Oregon and elsewhere in western North America. In late winter and spring, loud choruses of hundreds or thousands of frogs can be heard. These tiny frogs mate and lay eggs in lakes, ponds, slow-moving streams, shallow bodies of water, flooded fields, ditches and more. Learn about what they look like, what they sound like and how you can watch them making their “ribbit” call.

Pacific Chorus Frog Croaking
Переглядів 2,1 тис.Рік тому
The Pacific Chorus Frog (Pseudacris regilla, a.k.a. Pacific Tree Frog) is native to western North America, west of the Rocky Mountains. These were recorded in Corvallis, Oregon, in a field that has flooded pools in the winter and spring, but they dry up in summer. They are the loudest, most numerous frog in our area. Only the males croak and they do it to attract females. The frogs are tiny, up...

Mermithid worms
Переглядів 8962 роки тому
We found these in our garden during a rainy morning in late spring. They were scattered under a plum tree but we collected them into a pile to get photos and video. Not sure what species these are but they most resemble nematodes in the Mermithidae family. They resemble horsehair worms (Nematomorpha) but there are no bodies of water nearby. They may be a species in the Mermis genus and like hor...
Dog Vomit Slime - Scrambled Egg Slime
Переглядів 2652 роки тому
This Dog Vomit Slime (Fuligo septica) was found in our compost. It's not fungus but an aggregation of single-cell organisms in the phylum Amoebozoa. They live independently in the soil but then come together and dissolve, spread as a pulsing goo called a plasmodium searching for food. Most die off with the top layer eventually forming spores.

We'll show you how to get Anna's Hummingbirds to perch on your finger while you hold a feeder. This technique is effective with most Anna’s Hummingbirds in the Northwest in fall and winter, and may take a few weeks. You can try it with other hummingbird species or during other seasons, but you may not have the same results in spring and summer when hummingbirds can opt to visit flowers and eat ...

    I had the joy of hearing these again at Grandview Campground in California recently. Beautiful song. My family cared for a disabled common poorwill for several years which is how I know all their sounds. My mom was very close with the bird we named Ivan, handfeeding all his meals. She loved him like a little feathered son. She is dying and I am playing her this video on her deathbed. Thank you for uploading and sharing this beautiful song

    You have sets of videos- you are in charge of this presentation, therefor I don’t know the story of these sets of information. However, I am quite sure that one of your action video of an accipiter circling is a Goshawk. It is not a Cooper’s Hawk. Nelson Briefer- Anacortes, Wa., NG Specialist.

      Would you please provide a timestamp for the hawk you think looks more like a goshawk? And please give a reason why it looks more like a goshawk to you. In the Willamette Valley, OR, where this was recorded, American Goshawks are very rare while Cooper's Hawks are very common. The calls in this video are all Cooper's Hawks.

    Great video! How late in spring are the chorus frogs likely to be breeding? I ask because I finally caught and destroyed a female bullfrog that had taken up residence in my backyard pond, and I wonder if the surviving chorus frogs still have time to breed this year.

    • @neighborhood-naturalist

      Pacific Chorus Frogs may have multiple clutches in a season. They may continue to lay eggs until the summer heat gets too intense. There are a lot of local factors involved, like available food, water temperatures and predator pressure. Are there any more bullfrogs, including tadpoles?

    • @signedanler6188
      @signedanler6188 5 місяців тому

      @@neighborhood-naturalistNot that I've spotted. One usually moves in to our pond. If it is a male, we hear it of course, and catch it as quickly as we can. So far we've gotten them before any breeding occurs. For the last couple of years it has been this female, who has been growing and hasn't gone off to find a male. I finally caught her with a flashlight and net. I'm very glad to hear the chorus frogs have time, and I'll be watching for any bullfrog tadpoles just in case.

    I like be your video and all the information you provide! We are just getting ready to move to the Phoenix AZ area. Originally I’m from Iowa and love to see and greet my hummers in my butterfly garden! Unfortunately I can’t pack them and bring to Arizona! My question is, how do I attract new hummingbirds in my Arizona home location! I’ve seen them, much bigger than Iowa’s bird! But with the heat and desert like land, it’s hard to grow flowers! Any advice you may have would be greatly appreciated! (Oh, also my feeders seem to leak and cause a terrible sticky residue on decks, patios, windows etc)

    • @neighborhood-naturalist

      Checkout this article about attracting hummingbirds in Phoenix. www.azcentral.com/story/entertainment/life/2021/08/06/hummingbirds-facts-food-feeders-species-migration/5417847001/ We have issues with hummingbird tube-shaped or bottle feeders. The air on top expands during the day and forces nectar to leak out from the feeding ports on the bottom. We instead use the dish style feeders to avoid this problem. But they don't hold as much nectar.

      Maybe you saw Violet-green Swallows (Tachycineta thalassina) because they spend the winter in El Salvador. I haven't been to El Salvador but looking at field guides, there are some similar species. The Mangrove Swallow (Tachycineta albilinea) is very similar. Mangrove Swallows have a white rump (rabadilla in Spanish). The rump on a Violet-green Swallow has a dark center.

    We have a flock in our neighborhood. They spend most of their time foraging on bark insects in mature conifers. On hot days they’ll come down from the trees when I’m watering and play in the water! In order to protect these and other native birds, we need to protect old growth conifers. Do what you can locally to get involved. Join conservation groups and local Audubon chapters .

  • @MapleLeaf98115
    @MapleLeaf98115 Рік тому

    I read that they are endangered from habitat destruction, etc. They tend to live in tall, older trees so think of what you can do to help protect mature trees and legacy (old-growth) forests in your region. They support so many native birds. Think of joining local conservation groups and Audubon chapters.
